PREP & T-PREP Maker Design Studio Expo
Friday, July 31, 2026 at the Jarvis Auditorium in the Grimes Engineering Center
The Maker Design Studio (MDS) is an intensive short-course for incoming Berkeley Engineering freshman and transfer students created by Engineering Student Services and UC Berkeley Professor Scott Moura. This design and innovation-focused module is part of the summer programs at UC Berkeley called PREP (Pre-Engineering Program) and T-PREP (Transfer Pre-Engineering Program). MDS teaches students to rapidly ideate, design and prototype innovative engineering systems. To this end, we use the “Sprint” design process recently popularized within the start-up community.
We invite you to participate as a judge (or an observer) as PREP & T-PREP students present their product pitches to a panel of judges, Shark Tank-style.
The Design Maker Studio Expo takes place in person on Friday, July 31st from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm.

- 9:00am – 9:30am Breakfast
- 9:30am – 10:00am PREP/T-PREP Introduction + Judge Introduction
- 10:00am – 12:00pm Presentations
- 12:00pm – 12:45pm Lunch
- 12:45pm – 2:45pm Presentations
- 2:45pm – 3:30pm Awards & Closing Remarks
