GSIs, Readers, and Tutors – Department of Psychology

The Psychology Department is hiring TA/GSIs, Readers, and Tutors for Spring 2027! Please read everything in detail to ensure you are submitting your application accurately.

Application Form: Psychology ASE Application

Deadline: Monday, October 19, 2026 @ 5pm

Important Application Instructions:

  • LOCATION: All Psych ASE positions require students to be in Berkeley for the duration of the appointment.
  • REVIEW DUTIES: A critical requirement for the Psych ASE positions is to attend all lectures and respective session(s) in-person, unless otherwise noted on the ASE Duties. It is your responsibility to review the ASE Duties, identify any potential conflicts with your schedule, and ensure you can commit to all of the requirements of each position you choose to apply for. Review the lecture and section times on the Class Schedule. For quick reference, see Spring 2027 Lecture and Discussions quick reference sheet.
  • QUALIFICATIONS: Information on eligibility, qualifications, and compensation can be found in the Grad Appointments Handbook.
  • Work Authorization Requirement per Article 2 of the ASE Contract: Eligibility for employment for an ASE position is contingent upon the applicant’s ability to prove they are authorized to work in the United States. Work authorization verification occurs during onboarding, which must be completed prior to your start date.

PSYCH GSI: Review the Spring 2027 GSI Course Duties.

  • Psych GSI positions are 50% appointments with type 1 fee remission.
  • GSI Applicants must be available to attend all lectures AND all sections in-person unless otherwise specified on the Course Duties (Courses with multiple GSIs will divide sections amongst GSIs once the teaching teams are formed, which is why it is critical that you apply only to courses you are able to teach).
  • GSI Steps are determined via Experience Based Placement: See Experience-Based Salary Points and Salary Scales for ASEs

PSYCH Readers and Tutors: Review the Spring 2027 Reader and Tutor Course Duties.

  • Psych Reader and Tutor appointments are small appointments with fewer than 170 work hours. As such, they will not generate fee remission on their own, although it could potentially combine with other qualifying academic appointments to create fee remission eligibility; see Graduate Student Appointments Handbook for more information. See chart below for Reader and Tutor positions and corresponding maximum hours for the term (based on actual work completed).

RATES: ASE Current Rates (BX)

  • Make sure to look at the correct date column for the most current rate details for monthly rates.
  • Chart note: ***Annual salaries expressed as ten-month full-time equivalent salaries. For GSI positions at 50% FTE, make sure to divide the listed monthly rate by 2 to calculate the actual monthly rate for a 50% GSI. The standard semester GSI duration is a full 5 months.
