10/24/18 — Berkeley engineers, led by computer sciences professor Dawn Song, are part of the new Center for Trustworthy Machine Learning funded by the National Science Foundation. The NSF center, led by Pennsylvania State University and announced today, will focus on developing secure systems in the era of machine learning models. The center will receive $10 million over five years.
10/09/18 CoinDesk — A new survey ranks UC Berkeley second in the nation for blockchain education (and the only public school on the list). Berkeley was praised for its engineering prowess, its interdisciplinary courses and its vibrant on-campus community, including the Blockchain at Berkeley student group.

08/16/18 — New global rankings place UC Berkeley at the pinnacle of public universities and fifth overall in the world. The 2018 Academic Rankings of World Universities also score several Berkeley Engineering programs highly, including top-3 rankings for materials science and engineering, electrical and electronic engineering and biotechnology.

05/04/18 Graduate Division — At the UC-wide Grad Slam competition on May 3, environmental engineering doctoral student Joseph Charbonnet brought home the first-place ‘Slammy' - and $9,000 in prize money - for his three-minute talk on using manganese-coated sand to capture, clean and re-use stormwater.
02/27/18 — Berkeley's RISELab, led by EECS professor Ion Stoica, has received an Expeditions in Computing award from the National Science Foundation, providing $10 million in funding over five years to enable game-changing advances in real-time decision making technologies.
02/23/18 — The Prometheus Group, headed by materials science and engineering professor Lane Martin, has won UC Berkeley's grand prize for lab safety for the team's commitment to safe practices in their work on functional complex-oxide thin-film materials.
02/07/18 — EECS professor Constance Chang-Hasnain is among 83 new members elected to the National Academy of Engineering. Two alumni also were elected to the academy.
12/20/17 R&D — Aerospace engineer and astronaut candidate Warren "Woody" Hoburg (M.S.'11, Ph.D.'13 EECS) has been named Innovator of the Year by R&D Magazine for his pioneering work creating the Jungle Hawk Owl extended-flight drone.
12/04/17 — A team of UC Berkeley graduate students with serious data science and analysis skills, including EECS MS student Allen Tang and CEE Ph.D. candidate Eric Munsing beat teams from the likes of Harvard, MIT and Oxford to win the $100,000 top prize in an international data science competition staged by the hedge fund Citadel.

09/29/17 AAAS — The late EECS professor Lotfi Zadeh's 1965 concept of "fuzzy sets" has received a 2017 Golden Goose Award, bestowed by group of science societies to honor seemingly obscure, federally-funded research that had led to major breakthroughs.
08/23/17 — At the USENIX Security Conference in Vancouver this month, a team of computer science researchers from Berkeley Engineering won the 2017 Internet Defense Prize - and a $100,000 award - for their new approach to detecting credential spear phishing attacks.
08/21/17 — Berkeley Engineering sophomores Alex Montanez and Miriam Almaraz are part of the inaugural class of Hallac Scholars - a program sponsored by the global asset management firm BlackRock that's a combined scholarship, mentorship and internship all rolled into one. The goal of the new program is to teach engineers how to develop innovative tech for delivering financial services.
