Change of major

Students in the College of Engineering (CoE) must complete a minimum of one semester at Berkeley before they can apply for a change of major. However, our most heavily subscribed majors may require a minimum of two semesters.  Students must apply before their 5th semester begins.

We strongly recommend talking to your adviser as soon as your first semester to talk about eligibility requirements if you are planning to change majors.  Students can easily make themselves ineligible, even in the first semester, if they do not fully understand their individual requirements to make any major changes.

Make an appointment
with your ESS adviser

During the UC Berkeley application process you should apply to the major you wish to pursue as change of major is never guaranteed.

  • Transfer students are not eligible to change majors or add a second major (with one exception-see below). There are, however, six joint major programs to which transfer students may apply after their first semester if their current major is part of the joint major (e.g., an EECS transfer student may change to the EECS/MSE joint major if they meet minimum eligibility requirements). Transfer students who wish to change to a joint major must do so before their 3rd semester begins.
    • As an exception, CoE transfers in EECS who enter Fall 2025 may change to ECE during their first two semesters.  Once they change to ECE, they will not be able to change back.
  • Students admitted to the College of Engineering through change of college are not eligible to change majors or add a second major.
  • Effective for frosh admits F23 or later:  A change of major to EECS, or a joint major that includes EECS, must be the student’s first change.  If students have already changed their majors once, they will not be eligible to change to EECS, or a joint major that includes EECS.

If you are not in the above categories and you are eligible to apply to change your major, you must meet with your ESS Adviser to review minimum requirements to change to your intended major. Minimum requirements include:

  • Satisfactory academic progress in your current major. Satisfactory academic progress is defined as successfully completing at least two technical courses of at least 3 units each (with the exception of ENGIN 26) that satisfy your current major requirements each semester. This is in addition to any requirements for your prospective major. Students who are not making satisfactory academic progress in their current major are ineligible to change their majors. Note that Incompletes can also negatively impact your eligibility.
  • Specific minimum GPA and/or course requirements that vary by major. See your ESS Adviser to discuss eligibility.
  • Completion of a minimum of one semester at UC Berkeley (some majors require more than one semester completed)
  • Good academic standing
  • A planned program that includes a realistic trajectory for completing all degree requirements within the time allotted by the college.
  • Submission of a change of major application to your ESS Adviser before your 5th semester begins.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my major after my 5th semester?

No. All change of major applications must be submitted to your ESS Adviser before the first day of classes of your 5th semester.

How do I know what the department criteria is?

Meet with your adviser! Every department has different rules. Most have specific technical GPA criteria but some have specific course requirements as well.

Does my exam credit/transfer classes count toward satisfactory academic progress?

No. Satisfactory academic progress is defined as two technical courses toward your current major every semester.

Example: You are an MATSCI student in your first semester.  Because you have AP AB credit for MATH 1A, you decide to take MATH 1B,  DATA C8, and an R&C part B course in your first semester. This course schedule would make you ineligible to change your major because you do not have two technical courses that semester that fulfill your current major requirements (MATH 1B counts towards MATSCI major requirements but DATA C8 does not).  This requirement must be fulfilled every semester that you have completed at UC Berkeley, and does not count exams, or how many requirements you may have completed as a whole (the minimum is not an average over time).

If I didn’t take two technical courses towards my current major, what are my options?
  • A minor is always a great option!

  • Consider a certificate that is related to that area.

  • Join a club in that major to get more experience.

  • Seek additional opportunities related to that major. Students get jobs in all fields, not just specific to their major.

Is my change of major guaranteed if I meet all the criteria?

No. If you do not have a reasonable program plan, your change of major will be denied even if you meet the department criteria. Please note that the criteria is subject to change, so it is very important to consult with your ESS Adviser before you make any course schedule decisions.
