Faculty honors and awards

Berkeley Engineering faculty receive the most prestigious awards and honors bestowed by academic and professional societies, foundations and other civic organizations. Among these are nearly six dozen active and emeriti faculty who hold membership in the National Academy of Engineering.

Kevin Healy named AAAS Fellow

November 26, 2013
Kevin Healy, professor of bioengineering, has been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, an honor bestowed upon the association’s members by their peers. Healy was cited for his distinguished contributions to the fields of bioengineering and biomaterials science, particularly for the understanding and development of bioinspired materials.

George Leitmann receives French Legion of Honor

George Leitmann, professor of the Graduate School and professor emeritus of Engineering Science, has been awarded Knight of the Legion of Honor, France’s highest tribute recognizing military and civil service on behalf of the French nation.

Randy Schekman awarded 2013 Nobel Prize

October 7, 2013
Randy W. Schekman, professor of molecular and cell biology, has won the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his role in revealing the machinery that regulates proteins in our cells. He shares the prize with James E. Rothman of Yale University and Thomas C. Südhof of Stanford University.

Dean Sastry appointed to United Nations scientific advisory board

October 4, 2013
On Sept. 24, the first day of the UN General Assembly, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced his decision to create a Scientific Advisory Board to inform international decision-making on sustainable development. Dean S. Shankar Sastry will serve as one of two U.S. representatives on the 26-member board, which includes leading figures in the natural, social and human sciences. “We must strengthen the interface between science and policy,” said Ki-moon, “so that the latest scientific findings are reflected in our high-level policy discussions.” Ki-moon made the announcement during the inaugural meeting of the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, a platform created to realize the vision adopted at the UN’s Rio+20 conference in 2012. He has entrusted UNESCO’s Director-General to establish the advisory board.

Yablonovitch elected to membership in Royal Society

Eli Yablonovitch, professor of electrical engineering and computer science, is one of two Berkeley scientists elected as 2013 foreign members of the United Kingdom’s distinguished Royal Society, a fellowship of eminent scientists, engineers and technologists.

Cal EECS professor receives prestigious international award

June 13, 2013
Electrical engineering and computer science professor Eli Yablonovitch is one of two recipients of the 2012 Harvey Prize, a prestigious international award for his “pioneering discoveries in photonics, optoelectronics, and semiconductors.”
