04/12/17 AAAS — EECS professor Katherine Yelick is one of 228 newly elected fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the nation's oldest learned societies. Also honored in the 2017 class are Berkeley Engineering alumni Hari Balakrishnan, Andrea Goldsmith and Paul Jacobs.

X-Trace paper stands the Test of Time

04/03/17 UCSD — A paper on network tracing, authored a decade ago by five Berkeley Engineering grad students and professors, has won the 2017 NSDI Test of Time Award. Honored for their influential paper were former grad students Rodrigo Fonseca and George Porter (now CS professors at Brown University and UCSD, respectively) and EECS professors Ion Stoica, Randy Katz and Scott Shenker.

Also selected was Khalid Kadir, who created the Engineering, the Environment and Society course.

CZ Biohub awards nearly $14.5 million to Berkeley researchers

12/13/16 — Two Berkeley engineers - nanotechnology pioneer and materials scientist Paul Alivisatos and bioengineer Amy Herr - were among 175 distinguished academic inventors named fellows of the National Academy of Inventors, along with Berkeley chemical engineer Enrique Iglesia.

09/29/16 CITRIS — EECS professors Tsu-Jae King Liu and Claire Tomlin, and alumna Vidya Ganapati (M.S.'12, Ph.D.'15), are among the inaugural winners of the CITRIS Athena Awards, recognizing the accomplishments of technology leaders and organizations fostering interest in computer science for the next generation of women and girls.

Fiona Doyle wins SME metallurgy award

09/21/16 — MSE professor Fiona Doyle, dean of the Graduate Division, has been selected by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration as the 2016 recipient of the Milton E. Wadsworth Award, which recognizes distinguished contributions that advance understanding of the science and technology of non-ferrous chemical metallurgy.

NSF funds cyber-physical systems research

09/06/16 National Science Foundation — The NSF on Tuesday awarded $4.6 million to VeHICaL (Verified Human Interfaces, Control, and Learning for Semi-Autonomous Systems), a project led by by EECS professor Sanjit Seshia that seeks to "impact the way humans collaborate and interact with automation." Researchers include EECS professors Ruzena Bajcsy, Shankar Sastry, Bjoern Hartmann, Claire Tomlin, and Tom Griffiths.

08/23/16 — Wei Gao, an EECS postdoc developing wearable sweat sensors to monitor health, and EECS assistant professor Sergey Levine, who helped pioneer “deep learning” for robots, are among seven Berkeley engineers on this year's list of top innovators under 35, compiled by MIT Technology Review.

06/13/16 — Three young assistant professors, including Michael Yartsev of bioengineering, have received research awards from the Pew Charitable Trusts to pursue biomedical science and cancer research.

President Obama awards national medals to Alivisatos, Hu

05/20/16 — President Barack Obama honored two UC Berkeley faculty members at the White House, awarding chemist Paul Alivisatos with the National Medal of Science and electrical engineer Chenming Hu with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.
