Physicist Art Rosenfeld to receive National Medal of Technology & Innovation

01/03/13 Berkeley Lab — President Barack Obama has named UC Berkeley and LBNL physicist Arthur Rosenfeld one of this year's 11 recipients of the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. Rosenfeld is often called the “godfather of energy efficiency” because of his pioneering work on reducing the nation's energy usage.

Arsenic water filter recognized with international prize

10/09/12 Berkeley Lab — A team led by Ashok Gadgil, Berkeley Engineering professor and head of LBNL's environmental energy technologies division, has received the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water. The prize recognizes his team's advances in developing an effective and economical way to treat arsenic contamination in groundwater.

Bioengineers get NIH award for on-chip models of human heart and liver

07/24/12 NCATS — Bioengineering professors Kevin Healy (pictured) and Luke Lee and collaborators have been awarded a two-year, $1.7 million boost to develop on-chip models of living human heart and liver tissue from the NIH. The grant is part of the Tissue Chip for Drug Screening program, an initiative to help predict the safety of drugs more quickly and cost-effectively, and thereby speed the development of effective therapeutics.

American Bureau of Shipping endows ocean engineering chair

Herr of UC Berkeley is the recipient of the Analytical Chemistry 2012 Young Innovator Award, recognizing the contributions of an individual who has demonstrated exceptional technical advancement and innovation in the field of micro- or nanofluidics in his or her early career. Dr. Herr's research interests include use of scale-dependent phenomena to develop new tools for quantifying biomolecules in complex biological fluids.

Berkeley Engineering’s Ashok Gadgil honored for bridging innovation and humanitarianism to help millions globally

05/02/12 Business Wire — Dr. Ashok Gadgil is the recipient of the 2012 $100,000 Lemelson-MIT Award for Global Innovation in recognition of his steady pursuit to blend research, invention, and humanitarianism for broad social impact. Gadgil is a chair professor of Safe Water and Sanitation at UC Berkeley, and director of the Environmental Energy Technologies Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Ashok Gadgil wins Zayed Future Energy Prize’s Lifetime Achievement Award

01/18/12 Lab Manager Magazine — UC Berkeley civil and environmental engineering professor Ashok Gadgil has won the Lifetime Achievement award of the 2012 Zayed Future Energy Prize. The $3.5 million prize recognizes and rewards innovation, leadership and longterm vision in renewable energy and sustainability. Gadgil was recognized for "his sustainable humanitarian work in Darfur -- providing energy efficient cooking stoves known as Berkeley-Darfur stoves, cutting the need for firewood by 55 percent."

Berkeley Engineering nanotechnology expert Paul Alivisatos wins Wolf Prize in Chemistry

01/12/12 Nanowerk — Paul Alivisatos, director of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, UC Berkeley professor of materials science and engineering, and the Larry and Diane Bock Professor of Nanotechnology, has won the prestigious Wolf Foundation Prize in Chemistry for 2012. Alivisatos is an internationally recognized authority on nanochemistry and a pioneer in the synthesis of semiconductor quantum dots and multi-shaped artificial nanostructures.

Berkeley Engineering professor Carlo H. Séquin wins 2012 Mathematical Art Exhibition Award

01/09/12 American Mathematical Society — Carlo H. Séquin, professor of electrical engineering at computer sciences at UC Berkeley, has received an award for his mathematical sculpture, "Lawson's Minimum-Energy Klein Bottle," in the Mathematical Art competition hosted by the American Mathematical Society. Séquin has been creating abstract geometrical art since the early 1980s, and created the winning artwork using a program called Sculpture Generator 1, "which allows me to explore many more complex ideas...and to design and execute...geometries with higher precision."

Luke Lee awarded Gates Foundation grant

12/16/11 — Berkeley Bioengineering Professor Luke Lee has been selected to receive a Point-of-Care Diagnostics grant through Grand Challenges in Global Health, an initiative created by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The project goal is to develop a microfluidic Universal Sample Preparation (USP) module that is relevant for parallel diagnostics of infectious diseases. The grant will provide $1.47 million in research funding over three years.

Berkeley Engineering professor Lisa Pruitt wins A. Richard Newton Educator Award

ACM, IEEE Computer Society honor UC Berkeley professor Susan L. Graham for software development tools

09/29/11 Association for Computing Machinery — Susan L. Graham of the University of California Berkeley will receive the ACM-IEEE Computer Society Ken Kennedy Award for contributions to computer programming tools that have significantly advanced software development. Graham's research covers many areas of software, including human-computer interaction, programming systems, and high-performance computing. Her research collaborations have led to the construction of several interactive tools to enhance programmer productivity as well as programming language implementation methods that foster performance and software quality.
