Program Overview
Students interested in the mechanical behavior of materials have the option of pursuing a joint major in materials science and engineering and mechanical engineering. The curriculum addresses key fundamentals of both disciplines, preparing students in materials selection and design for structural and functional applications. Students completing this joint major enter professional positions in the aerospace, automotive, energy, and manufacturing industries, along with many others.

Notes
1Chemistry 4A is intended for students majoring in chemistry or a closely related field.
2The Humanities/Social Science (H/SS) requirement includes two approved reading and composition courses and four additional approved courses, with which a number of specific conditions must be satisfied. Reading and Composition “A” and “B” must be completed by no later than the end of the sophomore year. The remaining courses may be taken at any time during the program. See engineering.berkeley.edu/hss for complete details and a list of approved courses.
3A total of 12 upper division technical elective units are required. These must include 6 units of upper-division Mechanical Engineering courses, one of which must be from the following list: ME 101, 110, C117, 119, 128, 130, 135, 146, 165, C176 or Engin 128. In addition, 3 units must be from the MSE 120 series. Technical Electives cannot include any course taken on a P/NP basis; BioE 100; ChemE 185; CS 195, H195; Des Inv 190; Engin 125, 130AC, 140, 157AC; IEOR 172, 185, 186, 190 series, 191, 192, 195; ME 191AC, 190K, 191K. Students may receive up to three units of technical elective credit for work on a research project in MSE H194 or ME H194 or ME 196. Other letter-graded research courses may be approved by petition.
* A minimum of 120 units is required for graduation.
