Nuclear innovators on campus

August 12, 2016

During the first two weeks in August, Berkeley hosted its first-ever Nuclear Innovation Boot Camp. Twenty-five participants from around the world attended the intensive program designed to give current university students a toolkit to navigate and innovate across the nuclear energy sector.

Against the backdrop of developing clean energy solutions in the face of climate change, students heard from experts from multiple disciplines, including business development and entrepreneurship. Student  teams worked on projects related to fostering new technologies and services that support future nuclear energy growth.

“This boot camp is a giant stride forward in the clean energy race,” says Rachel Slaybaugh, nuclear engineering professor and the founder of the Nuclear Innovation Boot Camp. “The call to action has been answered. The nuclear industry can and is doing what it takes to change how things are so that we, as a planet, can have clean, affordable energy for everyone.”

Watch the boot camp participants as they share the stage with the Department of Energy’s Acting Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy John Kotek and pitch the ideas that have sprung from the boot camp.
