Neil Ray

Alumni SpotlightB.S. `13 Bioengineering
Resident Physician at the University of Pennsylvania
Hometown: Chatsworth, CA

Neil Ray in a hospital roomJob description

I’m currently a resident physician of emergency medicine at Penn. This role is meant to be a “jack of all trades,” so I have to be able to handle anything that comes in through our doors. The emergency department is the safety net of the American healthcare system — I have the privilege of taking care of patients from all walks of life. It’s a pretty fast-paced and exciting environment in which to work and every single day is different.

Skills learned at Cal

Honestly, just having the tools to approach any problem, no matter how complex it might be. Engineering gives you a toolbox that can be applied to any path in your life. For me, I was involved in medical devices, so all of the design-thinking and engineering principles have proved to be invaluable in my career.

Something few people know

I held Glenn Seaborg’s Nobel Prize for Chemistry!
