Berkeley Engineering recognized for diversity commitment

July 29, 2019

This month, Berkeley Engineering was recognized as an exemplar bronze medalist by the American Society for Engineering Education’s (ASEE’s) Diversity Recognition Program. This program was created to publicly recognize engineering colleges that make significant, measurable progress in increasing the diversity, inclusion and degree attainment.

The college was recognized for its activities that increase the recruitment, retention and advancement of underrepresented students, both undergraduate and graduate, as well as faculty and staff. Berkeley Engineering was also commended for working toward creating an inclusive climate for all by increasing the cultural literacy and competency among all of its strategic planning members.

“This recognition acknowledges what we’ve done so far toward building a more diverse and inclusive community, but I believe this is just a starting point, something that encourages us to up our game and accelerate progress,” said Fatima Alleyne, director of faculty engagement for equity and inclusion. “I think our next step is to quantify what it means to be a diverse community.”
