Dean Sastry honored with degree from Politecnico di Torino

February 16, 2018

Berkeley Engineering Dean S. Shankar Sastry, the Roy W. Carlson Professor of Engineering, received an honorary doctoral degree from Politecnico di Torino on Feb.16.

The ceremony took place in the Hall of Honour at the Castello del Valentino, a historic palace on the Politecnico di Tornio campus in Turin, Italy.

Sastry was recognized for his work in the field of telecommunications engineering, specifically for his research in non-linear and adaptive control, autonomous robotic systems and cyber-physical systems.

The honorary degree also recognizes Sastry’s focus on positive social impact as the faculty director of the Blum Center for Developing Economies and the former director of the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) at Berkeley.

College advisory board member Tom Siebel, the CEO of C3 IoT, a software platform for building and managing artificial intelligence and internet of things applications for industrial use, also received an honorary degree during the ceremony. Siebel was recognized for the various disruptive technologies he has contributed as the founder, chairman and CEO of Siebel Systems, and as the founder of the Siebel Energy Institute, a global energy research consortium.
