Notes

1CHEM 4A is for students majoring in chemistry, chemical engineering or a closely related field. Students considering changing to the College of Chemistry/Chemical Engineering major should take CHEM 4A; all other students should take CHEM1A/1AL.

2Choose one course from the following list based upon possible major.

  • Bioengineering: BIOENG 10 and 26
  • Civil Engineering: DATA C8
  • Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences: COMPSCI 61A or COMPSCI 10 or DATA C83
  • Energy Engineering: ENGIN 93
  • Industrial Engineering and Operations Research: DESINV 15 and/or DATA C8
  • Materials Science and Engineering: MATSCI 45 and 45L
  • Mechanical Engineering: ENGIN 26
  • Nuclear Engineering: MATSCI 45 and 45L

3Intended Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences majors should take DATA C8, COMPSCI 10, or COMPSCI 61A during the first semester. Students with no programming experience are encouraged to take DATA C8 or COMPSCI 10. During the second semester, students who completed DATA C8 or COMPSCI 10 in fall should take COMPSCI 61A in spring, and students who completed COMPSCI 61A in fall should take COMPSCI 61B in spring.

4The Humanities/Social Sciences (H/SS) requirement includes two approved Reading & Composition (R&C) courses and four additional approved courses, with which a number of specific conditions must be satisfied. R&C courses must be taken for a letter grade (C- or better required). The first half (R&C Part A) must be completed by the end of the freshman year; the second half (R&C Part B) must be completed by no later than the end of the sophomore year. The remaining courses may be taken at any time during the program. See engineering.berkeley.edu/hss for complete details and a list of approved courses.

5Most engineering majors are required to take MATH 54. Intended Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences majors are not required to take a sophomore second semester math course. Intended Engineering Physics majors may take MATH 54 or PHYSICS 89. Intended Materials Science and Engineering students are required to take PHYSICS 89.

6Students choose these requirements with their Engineering Student Services Adviser and Faculty Adviser based upon their intended major(s).
