In the domain of design: Berkeley has a long history of design-related scholarship. Now, as the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation finds its footing, the College of Engineering will be equipped to support its students, faculty and staff as they create technologies and devices to tackle the world’s “wicked problems.”

Jacobs Hall: New home for design innovation: With the steel structure raised and anchored, and walls and windows taking shape, construction at the new Jacobs Hall site is well underway. The building’s doors will open in late August, just in time for the academic year and for the start nearly two dozen new design-related courses that will be held within.

Design case studies: These case studies look at different projects that occupy various niches in the college’s maturing innovation ecosystem. From student projects that are little more than polished prototypes, to full-fledged companies shipping their products, these case studies provide good examples of what “innovative design” looks like.

Dean’s Word: The college is developing systems and structures that supply and support the growing innovation ecosystem. Wider campus connections and industry and alumni networks open opportunities for students and faculty to develop solutions to some of the world’s biggest problems.
