Quotes from former Teaching Consultants:
“I can safely say that I would not be the teacher I am today if I had not worked as a campuswide consultant. I have much higher standards for myself as a teacher, and I feel that I am better at being able to evaluate my own and other people’s teaching now. I received stellar student evaluations during my first semester as a full-time faculty member, largely, I believe, due to my use of teaching techniques and self-evaluation techniques that I learned while working at the GSI Center. I cannot possibly recommend the experience more highly to graduate students who plan to go on to make teaching a significant part of their careers.”
– Amy Lesen, Professor of Environmental Leadership and Participative Change, Antioch University, Graduate School of Leadership and Change
“The campuswide consultant position with the GSI Teaching and Resource Center provided me with incredible insight into the process of teaching and the critical task of exploring how and why we teach, not just what we teach. So much of our time as graduate students focuses on how to conduct research effectively–a vital skill, but as many of us will become teachers of some sort–either as members of a faculty, or managers of a research team–we often miss out on learning how to teach, or perhaps more appropriately, how to be an effective leader and encourage people teach themselves. The position at the GSI Teaching and Resource Center goes one step further in allowing you to examine the effectiveness of teaching strategies, tools, and styles across disciplines and course types.
– Caryl Waggett, Professor of Global Health Studies, Allegheny College

- 50% Fall 2026 Appointment
First Review will be July 20th. Please complete this google form if you are interested. Examples of the Data Discovery Projects can be found on our program website: https://cdss.berkeley.edu/discovery

Students accepted to the Data Discovery program match with an industry or faculty mentor to work on a project that applies data skills to real-world problems. The project exposes students to the challenges of problem solving beyond the classroom. Complementing and scaffolding that work, the course builds skills for working with data, communication, teamwork, and project management across four interrelated themes:
- Contextualizing work within the larger framework of the project and integrating experience with studies and professional goals.
- Communicating clearly and genre-appropriately about data, methods, and interim results with different audiences.
- Working as part of a team towards collaborative learning, project management, and problem-solving.
- Developing personal processes around time management, resourcefulness, and independent work.
Commitment
- Lecture Series. Tuesday at 5pm – 6pm. Work closely with curriculum staff to develop and produce a series of guest speakers for one hour a week, 6-9 weeks out of the semester. On weeks no guest speaker is present, the Instructor will be responsible for using this time as instruction to support best practices in their team settings and poster project designs.
- Lab Sections Lead 2 separate breakout labs with half the students for working group meetings and check ins. This is a space for calibration and goal setting.
- Office hours – Host 2-3 hours of office hours per week.
- Grading – Review and grade poster presentations and written assignments. Typically we require 5 lab journal entries where teams document progress.
- Symposium – Support curriculum staff and events staff with the implementation of the final research symposium during RRR week.

Reader – Spanish 33
The Department of Spanish & Portuguese is seeking to hire two Readers to assist Prof. Raúl Coronado in Spanish 33, scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 am to 11 am. Here are some details about the positions:
Spanish 33 is taught in English and all student assessments will be in English. The graduate student Reader’s responsibilities include proofreading the bCourses page, taking attendance, grading all assessments, entering grades in bCourses, and meeting with the professor to discuss the assessments.
There will be three quizzes, two exams, and one 2-page report describing the student’s experience at a Latinx culture event. All assessments will be done on paper; we will use Gradescope to assist with the grading. The professor will grade five assessments in order to calibrate grading with the Readers, will share grading strategies with the Readers, and will be available to discuss grading with the Readers. Readers will then grade the remaining assessments. Quizzes consist of about 10 short-answer questions and typically take about five minutes each to grade; exams include about 15-20 questions, with a combination of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, matching, short answer, and two longer answer questions (approximately two-paragraph responses). The Latinx culture event report is informal and designed to encourage students to participate in community events; grading will be based on whether the student accomplished this objective or not. During designated grading weeks, Readers may focus exclusively on grading and will not be expected to attend class.
Prior reading of all course materials is less important than consistent attendance and familiarity with course content. The primary qualification is that the applicant’s primary area of research is in Latinx humanities.
Applicants should send their CV and Transcript directly to Prof. Coronado at raulc@berkeley.edu
