Class of 2020
Why did you choose Berkeley Engineering? Berkeley has a great, well-funded College of Engineering with access to many research opportunities and resources. I also enjoy the city of Berkeley and the surrounding Bay Area, as well as the visible (relatively speaking) queer community and resources for the queer community on and off campus.
What else do you do outside of class? In my free time I like to swim, paint (and I'm taking a painting class; yes there is room in my schedule!), volunteer for the National Lawyers Guild as a legal observer, work in the CAEE as a tutor, and I work in ASUC Senator Cordova's office.
Have you had a memorable “aha” moment (yet) at Berkeley Engineering? When I realized I was struggling with mental health problems! It sounds sad and maybe isn't the conventional "aha" moment, but Berkeley Engineering is rigorous and I think having consideration for one's mental health is a critical factor in thriving within these programs. So while Berkeley did not cause my mental health problems, they became increasingly evident through the rigors of college/life in general and addressing said issues has allowed me to grow and succeed in ways I otherwise wouldn't have been able to.
