Jean Nguyen

Where did you go to college?
UC Irvine for undergrad and NYU for grad school.

How long have you been with the College of Engineering?
I started my time with the College of Engineering as a PhD advisor in EECS where I was for 6 years. I recently joined the ESS team.

What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of being an adviser is connecting with my students and watching them reach their milestones.

What advice do you have for students?
Step out of your comfort zone and explore while you’re in college – this time will pass before you know it. Don’t hesitate to ask for help – it doesn’t make you any less capable.

What is the most unusual job you’ve had?
In college I had a part time job working for a Ralph Lauren buyer for boutiques around Orange County. I helped with inventory, which is a fancy way of saying I counted ties and tallied stock totals for each menswear item.

What are your favorite TV shows?
Beef, The Good Place, Dark, and I can forever watch reruns of The Office.

What is your favorite song, band or type of music?
My taste in music spans mostly everything, but lately I’ve been either playing Khruangbin or nostalgic 90s/early 2000s (Rage Against the Machine, No Doubt, Beastie Boys).
