2021 Commencement student speaker auditions

The College of Engineering is hosting auditions to be a 2021 commencement student speaker. One speaker each will be selected for the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral ceremonies. Auditions will be held virtually. In order to be eligible to participate, you must be graduating in the Fall 2020, Spring 2021 or Summer 2021 semesters. You must register by April 14 and then submit a video and your written speech by April 23. Auditions will not be live.

Your speech should:

  • Be between four and five minutes
  • Have an original theme that is forward looking
  • Be optimistic
  • Contain some nostalgia about your time at Cal
  • Be non-technical
  • Be aimed at family and friends

You do not need to be in regalia in your audition video. Your video audition does not need to be a verbatim delivery of your written speech, but it should be close. If selected, you will have the opportunity to record a final presentation version of your remarks.

Candidates will be notified of their selection on May 4. A final version of the recording will be scheduled between May 5 and May 14.
