Dorit Hochbaum: IEOR’s first female faculty member
IEOR Professor Dorit Hochbaum
When Dorit Hochbaum was hired as a professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering & Operations Research (IEOR) at UC Berkeley in 1988, she became the first woman appointed to that department’s faculty. She’s a maestro in discrete optimization, network flows and integer programming, and she has authored more than 160 papers appearing in operations research, management science, and theoretical computer science literature sources. Her research work on data mining and pattern recognition is renowned worldwide. Recently, she’s worked on problems related to neuroscience, medical imaging and homeland security through flow-based pattern recognition algorithms.
Currently the head graduate faculty adviser in the department, Hochbaum has supervised several Ph.D. theses, helping to shape several successful careers in academia. She has also worked on production planning and supply chain management for high-tech industries. In recognition of her accomplishments, she was named as honorary doctorate of Sciences of the University of Copenhagen, for her work on approximation algorithms. She has been selected as an INFORMS fellow and awarded the INFORMS Computing Society prize for her work on algorithms for image segmentation. In 2014, she was also named a Society of Applied Mathematics fellow for her innovative application of approximation algorithms.
