Design Field Notes: Mike Marzalek
4:00pm - 5:00pm
Location: 220, Jacobs Hall
About Design Field Notes:
Each informal talk in this pop-up series brings a design practitioner to a Jacobs Hall teaching studio to share ideas, projects, and practices.
About this talk:
Mike Marzalek (BSEE 1969) gradually lost his hearing over time and twelve years ago got a cochlear implant (CI) .... a bionic ear. At that time Mike was a telecommunications research and development engineer with Hewlett Packard. Music with a CI is not great. So Mike decided he would try to improve things, and to do that he would need to hack his CI and build his own sound processor. Mike recently has come to believe that the general scientific understanding of how the ear works is only partially correct, so he implemented his own version electronically using his hacked CI. He is now testing closer to "normal hearing" individuals on some tests than those with CIs.
