Coleman Fung Institute for Engineering Leadership
The Coleman Fung Institute for Engineering Leadership is a campus leader in project-based learning and opening access to STEM across disciplines. It’s dedicated to transforming students from all backgrounds into the science and tech leaders of tomorrow. Headquartered at UC Berkeley’s College of Engineering, the Institute was launched in 2010 with a mission to shape generations of technical leaders to innovate across disciplines through teaching, research and service activities. Its two subprograms include the undergraduate Fung Fellowship and graduate Master of Engineering (MEng) program.
Did you know?
- Working with the CITRIS Invention Lab, MEng students have used open-source design and 3-D printing to build low-cost, customizable prosthetics.
- A Fung Fellowship student project has created an augmented reality mobile application to alleviate anxiety in pediatric cancer patients.
- Using controllers, path planning and computer vision, an MEng team has developed legged-robot locomotion to perform wildfire search and rescue missions and other dangerous environments like nuclear leaks and earthquake zones.

A less-invasive hip transplant
Worldwide, more than 370,000 total hip arthroplasties and 70,000 revision surgeries are performed each year. A Berkeley MEng team developed a less-invasive implant that’s about seven times smaller than those currently on the market. They used Finite Element Analysis to determine if these implants will be not only feasible but superior in reducing stress shielding and preventing unnecessary bone loss while maintaining functionality.
Motivating young students
with virtual reality
Partnering with wellness technology startup Blue Goji, a team of Fung Fellows developed VRplayful, a pilot project exploring whether active virtual reality play might be effective as an incentive or motivational tool. It could help elementary-aged students from underserved communities with ADHD or other behavioral issues to improve their focus/attention for school and homework.
