BEar News: From the Dean
Mark Asta, Fall 2025
Dear Berkeley Engineering alums,
We are about three weeks into a new academic year, and as the interim dean of engineering, I have the privilege of sharing my excitement with you as students arrive on campus and settle into the rhythm of classes, clubs and extracurricular activities.
Part of the excitement this fall comes from our newest engineering building, the Grimes Engineering Center. We celebrated its opening in April, and this will be the first full year that we’ll get to enjoy use of the building. Students will be able to take advantage of the numerous resources offered, including advising, tutoring and counseling through Engineering Student Services and areas for student groups to convene. The building also hosts entrepreneurship, international and outreach programs, creating opportunities that will promote a greater sense of community.
I have a fantastic view of the Grimes Engineering Center from my office in McLaughlin Hall, and I can confirm that the building is buzzing with activity. That’s not surprising given that this year’s cohort of new students is among the largest we’ve ever had. Altogether, more than 1,290 first-year and transfer undergraduate students and more than 1,200 graduate students are joining the ranks of the best public engineering program in the country.
What makes the Grimes Engineering Center even more meaningful is that the project resonated with so many UC Berkeley alumni and friends, enough so that its construction was entirely supported by philanthropy. More than 165 donors, including many of you, invested in the college’s vision for this critical project. It was an important vote of confidence, and on behalf of our community, I would like to take the opportunity to express my deep gratitude for any and all support you’ve provided.
In this issue, you’ll read about the numerous ways you can engage with the college this fall, such as attending Homecoming or exploring the Berkeley Alumni Portal. Your support strengthens our community.
Fiat Lux — and Go Bears!
