Elena Kassianidou wins HHMI Fellowship

08/14/13 — BioE graduate student Elena Kassianidou has been awarded an International Predoctoral Fellowship from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Kassianidou, from Cyprus, is pursuing her dissertation in Berkeley bioengineering professor Sanjay Kumar's lab.

Student hacker wins award for wearing a ‘white hat’

06/19/13 Los Angeles Times — Berkeley computer science junior Skyler Rojas has been awarded $2000 by the Information Systems Security Association at the Cornerstones of Trust conference for choosing a career in cybersecurity. Rojas, who is interning this summer at Symantec, says his dream job would be "penetration tester" - someone who works from the inside to find network vulnerabilities.

Price, a double major in bioengineering and electrical engineering and computer sciences with a minor in physics, was selected as one of this year's Rhodes Scholars. EECS alumni Micali and Goldwasser win Turing Award

03/18/13 Association for Computing Machinery — Ph.D. EECS alumni Silvio Micali and Shafi Goldwasser have been named winners of the ACM Turing Award, considered the Nobel Prize of computer science. The two, both now computer science professors at MIT, pioneered the field of provable security, which laid the mathematical foundations that made modern cryptography possible.

Berkeley Engineering ranks among top 3 graduate schools

03/13/13 U.S. News & World Report — Along with MIT and Stanford, Berkeley Engineering is once again ranked among the top three schools for graduate study, according to the Best Graduate Schools 2014 guidebook from U.S. News & World Report. All departmental programs earned spots in the top 10, with No. 1 rankings going to computer science and environmental engineering.

Assembly honors Weili Dai for ‘Breaking the Glass Ceiling’

SkyDeck wins Catalyst Award

02/15/13 Haas Newsroom — SkyDeck, the UC Berkeley startup accelerator in downtown Berkeley, won the Catalyst Award at the first-ever East Bay Innovation Awards celebration. The year-old SkyDeck is a collaboration between the College of Engineering, the Haas School of Business, and the Vice Chancellor for Research Office.

Berkeley students make finals for Disney design competition

01/30/13 Daily Californian — A trio of UC Berkeley students, including Kathryn Moore from Mechanical Engineering and Andrew Lin from Bioengineering, have made it to the finals of a national Disney-sponsored design competition with their plan for SAMM-E, a robot-turned-food-truck.

EECS team to lead $27.5 million TerraSwarm Research Center

10/16/12 Graduate Division — VMware could have honored software architect Michael Nelson (B.A'83 CS, Ph.D'88 EECS) with a gold watch and a handshake for his groundbreaking contributions to cloud technology. Instead, the firm endowed an $800,000 fellowship at Berkeley. In all, the Graduate Fellowships Matching Program has set up more than 60 funds campuswide – 13 of them in the College of Engineering alone.

Barbara Simons discusses electronic voting on Charlie Rose

10/10/12 Charlie Rose — In an interview with TV journalist Charlie Rose, computer science alumna Barbara Simons (Ph.D., 1981) discusses her new book on electronic voting, Broken Ballots: Will Your Vote Count? In 2005, Simons became the first woman to receive the college's Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award.

C.D. (Dan) Mote Jr. nominated to be next National Academy of Engineering president

09/12/12 National Academy of Engineering — The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) 2013 nominating committee has unanimously recommended C.D. (Dan) Mote Jr. to stand as the sole candidate for the NAE presidency. Mote received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Berkeley, where he served on the faculty for 31 years and held positions as chair of the department of mechanical engineering, president of the UC Berkeley Foundation, and vice chancellor.

2013 Siebel Scholars announced

09/10/12 Siebel Foundation — Nine Berkeley Engineering graduate students have been named 2013 Siebel Scholars. This year's cohort of 85 graduate students in the nation's leading business, bioengineering and computer science programs join a group of almost 800 in the program, which fosters leadership and academic achievement. Honorees receive $35,000 to complete their final year of study. Congratulations to this year's winners: In Bioengineering: Lukasz Jan Bugaj, Laura Rose Croft, Timothy Lamont Downing, Alex James Hughes and Debkishore Mitra; and in EECS: Yunlong Li, Antonio Lupher, Brandon Wang and Wei Wu.

NSF awards $2 million to develop flexible bioelectronics systems

08/30/12 — The National Science Foundation has awarded $2 million over four years for a UC Berkeley project to develop flexible bioelectronics systems. The research would support the development of electronic materials that could not only be implanted into the body for medical applications such as wound healing, but that could also be safely resorbed into the body.

UC Berkeley leads nation in tech CEO graduates

07/05/12 Network World — The University of California at Berkeley is the number one university for producing U.S. tech industry CEOs. Graduates include Paul Jacobs, CEO and chairman of Qualcomm, who holds three degrees from Berkeley: bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees in electrical engineering. Another graduate of Berkeley is Paul Otellini, CEO and president of Intel, who holds an MBA from the Haas School of Business, as does Shantanu Narayan, CEO and president of Adobe.

UC Berkeley Nuclear Engineering Department receives American Nuclear Society Presidential Citation

06/21/12 Virtual Strategy — The UC Berkeley Nuclear Engineering Department has been awarded an American Nuclear Society Presidential Citation for serving at the leading edge of communication to educate California and the nation about radiological impact to the U.S. from the Fukushima incident. "The efforts by UC-Berkeley Nuclear Engineering faculty and students to provide accurate and authoritative information to the public following Fukushima were outstanding and serve as a model to emulate," said ANS President Eric Loewen.
