Program Overview

This major is for students who have a keen interest in the field of biomaterials. Students will study the design and synthesis of novel materials that will define new paradigms in biomaterials from the molecular through macroscopic levels, and will also receive a broad –based learning experience that will include exposure to fundamental courses in engineering and life sciences. This joint major aims to allow the student to understand the interface between the two major fields. Students taking this double major will successfully compete for jobs in the field of biomaterials in academe, industry and government.

Notes

1Chemistry 4A and 112A are intended for students majoring in chemistry or a closely related field. Note: Prerequisites to Chemistry 112A include Chemistry 1A and 1AL and 1B (or 4A and 4B).

2The Humanities/Social Sciences (H/SS) requirement includes two approved reading and composition courses and four additional approved courses, with which a number of specific conditions must be satisfied. Reading and Composition “A” and “B” must be completed by no later than the end of the sophomore year. The remaining courses may be taken at any time during the program. See engineering.berkeley.edu/hss for complete details and a list of approved courses.

4Students must take one course with ethics content. This may be fulfilled within the Humanities/Social Sciences Requirement by taking one of the following courses: Anthropology 156B; BioE 100; Engineering 125, 157AC; Environmental Science, Policy, and Management 161, 162; IAS 157AC; Letters and Science 160B; ME 191AC; Philosophy 2, 104, 107; Public Health 116.

5Select one from the Bioengineering Design Project and Research List: BioE 121L, 140L, 168L, 192, H194, 196.

6Choose course from the Technical Electives List (consult the Berkeley Academic Guide for prerequisites). BioE 111, 113, 116, C117, 121, H194, 196; MSE 103, 111, 112 or 113. Cannot be a course you have taken to fulfill another requirement.

7Junior transfer admits are exempt from completing BioE 10

8BioE 110 is offered in Fall semester. BioE 113 is offered in Spring semester. If you take choose to take BioE 110, take MCB C100A or MCB 102 in Spring. If you take BioE 113, take MCB C100A or MCB 102 in Fall.

* A minimum of 120 units is required for graduation.
