Department Overview

The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) has 39 full-time faculty members dedicated to the education of more than 300 undergraduate students and 350 graduate students. CEE at Berkeley prepares students for leadership roles in the civil and environmental engineering field, whether in a professional or academic career.

The CEE laboratories for teaching and research are among the best in the nation, providing opportunities for hands-on experience for all students.

CEE's doctoral program tops the 2010 National Research Council rankings. US News & World Report's rankings for 2014 has CEE's graduate program in civil engineering #2 and its environmental engineering #1. Environmental engineering has held the #1 spot for the past 5 years; civil engineering has been in the top 2 for the past 11 years. 

USN&WR ranked CEE's civil engineering undergraduate program #2 in the nation for 2013; environmental is ranked #3. 

Undergraduate Program

CEE's undergraduate program offers opportunities for rigorous academic learning, fellowship, hands-on experience, and leadership. Classes are relatively small, so students get to know both the faculty and fellow students.

CEE's four-year curriculum leads to an ABET-accredited B.S. degree in civil engineering. The program provides students with a strong fundamental background in engineering science, design, and practice.

Undergraduates at Berkeley have opportunities for professional interactions and community service. CEE has active student chapters of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the national honor society Chi Epsilon as well as five nationally-ranked competition teams.

Notes

1The Humanities/Social Sciences (H/SS) requirement includes two approved reading and composition courses and four additional approved courses, with which a number of specific conditions must be satisfied. Reading and Composition "A" and "B" must be completed by no later than the end of the sophomore year. The remaining courses may be taken at any time during the program. See coe.berkeley.edu/hssreq for complete details and a list of approved courses.

3Chem 4A is intended for students majoring in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a closely-related field.

4CE 11 or CE 70. If CE 70 was taken in the freshman year students must take CE 11. <3> indicates this requirement is taken in either the fall or spring (not both). CE 11 is offered in Spring. CE 70 in Fall.
